Field Experience 3

March/April 2024

A Summary...

This field experience has been absolutely incredible! Being placed in Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 Photography and Communications Media, I have rediscovered my love for teaching and media creation! I have learned so much and believe that I have taken away a lot of useful tools to incorporate in my next Field Experience. Below are some of the things I have learned…

  • How to incorporate Indigenous culture, values, and perspectives into my lessons: This was something that I had initially struggled with in the early stages of my experience, as the classes I teach (photography and video production) are technology and skills based. However, throughout my Field Experience, I have learned ways to incorporate it through highlighting various Indigenous creators and photos/videos depicting their values, beliefs, and traditions.
  • Classroom Management: When first coming into this experience I was unsure on how much authority I had over the students and how to get them to quiet down/stay on task. In the beginning I let my partner teacher handle most of the classroom management because I didn’t want to overstep. However, the longer I was here for and the better I got to know the students, I found a good balance!
  • Making Connections with Students: I have discovered that it is of the utmost importance to create good relationships with your students. When teachers and students have good relationships, not only is the classroom a better environment to learn, but a teacher can also tailor lesson plans better based on the various learner needs in their classroom. This has been a crucial thing I’ve realized that is necessary to become a good teacher!

My students throughout this experience have been absolute rockstars! I couldn’t have asked for better classes! I had such a great time teaching students photography and videography as that is where my passion lies. It was so amazing to see the passion of this creative area rub off on them and inspire them to be creative! I will miss my students from this Field Experience dearly, especially after all of the heart-warming cards they have left me! I’ll remember this experience forever!
